Good Apple? Bad Apple? Stephen Lewis on Corporate Behaviour
MP3 RadioThe Canadian documentary “The Corporation” would have the viewer believe that telling good companies from bad is as simple as separating good apples from bad ones. Steven Lewis challenges this idea. In a speech presented to the Social Investment Organization’s conference in June, he raises difficult ethical questions about assessing corporate behaviour.
For those not familiar with Mr Lewis, he was the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations from 1984 - 88, where he chaired the committee that drafted the 5-year UN Programme on African Economic Recovery. In 1986, the Secretary-General of the United Nations appointed him the Special Advisor on Africa to mobilize the international community to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic sweeping that continent. More recently, Mr. Lewis accepted an appointment as the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa with a mandate to ensure the follow-up to the 2001 Africa Summit and to the 2001 United Nations Special Session on HIV/AIDS.
