SPOKES is a Bike Bursary Program that is run by the UVic Students’ Society and the UVic Sustainability Project, with support from Facilities Management at the University of Victoria.

Started in September 2003, the aim of the program is to fix up old bikes to lend out to students in order to introduce folks to the benefits of commuter cycling and divert wastes from Hartland Landfill.

On Friday March 18th the 75th SPOKES Bike was given out!

Bikes are repaired by student volunteers with the help of local professionals. Bursaries are given out to undergraduate students in September, January and April and include a refurbished bike, lock and free commuter cycling skills course. Winners are determined through an application process which emphasizes a variety criteria such as financial need, geographic location and interest in commuter cycling.

At this point the program is looking for donations of tools or time as we have ample bikes to fix up. Should you be interested in volunteering for the program, contact Sarah Webb at 472-5011.
