Wow, where did the past five days go! Never thought it would be this long before I go back to my blog. Oh well, life is what happens while one is busy making plans, or something like that.
I ended my last blog by asking whether I and other so-called ethical or green consumers were hypocrites. We espouse a particular set of values but inevitably make choices that run counter to them. As I mentioned I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm surrounded by electronics (computers, monitors, hard drives, DVD player, VHS player etc.), each associated with a great deal of toxic materials in their production and disposal or recycling. I don't always use my bike or public transit, even though I know I could.
But I don't think such inconsistencies necessarily make me or others like me hypocrites. As I understand the term, it means someone who affects virtues or qualities he or she does not have. This is not me. I'm not pretending to be someone I'm not. I'm striving to be as green or ethical as I can possibly be. I feel badly when I don't remain true to my beliefs and attempt to make what changes I can to improve the congruency between my thoughts, feelings, words and deeds. In other words, I dedicated to achieve the highest level of integrity I can.
Having said this, I also recognize and accept that I desire a certain lifestyle and have a bit of lazy streak which results in decisions that run counter to my intentions. The goal is to minimize the discrepencies as much as possible. And this is an never-ending process, or so it seems.
Got to dash. Busy day today. In a few hours I leave for campus to give another lecture to my parks and protected areas class.
Hope you're having a great day.
