Groundhog Days

West Coast Drill; Seed Work Fantastic, Rain Road Tunnel; Eatsy Popsy, Evening Jazz Vespers, Sleepy Sublime, Dreamy Schemey, Wakey Shakey. West Coast Drill..... I have always liked the movie "Groundhog Day" because it manages to convey, in cinematic form, the idea of repetition, and the recurring cycle. Not an easy topic to articulate and convey, and I thought they did a decent job of taking a run at this elusive but pervasive notion. The Book of Days; the piecemeal crunch of most Human Accomlishment; the moment of “here I am at the bus stop again”; the bowl of cereal; the toothbrush; the big poop; we are behind the face peering into the mirror; we are present as the wheel turns. I have always liked the movie "Groundhog Day" because it manages to convey, in cinematic form, the idea of repetition, and the recurring cycle. Not an easy topic to articulate and convey, and I thought they did a decent job of taking a run at this elusive but pervasive notion. The Book of Days; the piecemeal crunch of most Human Accomplishment….. And there are those who find great comfort in this; the regulated monkish schedule, week in, week out, month by month, year by year; supper at six, lights out at 09:30. Babies, and flowers, tadpoles, and the Holy Forest all relish and delight in the certainty of the daily cycle, and grow to fantastic depths within this natural matrix of cycles, and yet again; this natural matrix of cycles. There are also those who dread the calypso kaleidoscope; the monstrous merry go round of Nightmare Steeds that loom and then pass, loom and then pass again. For them the repetition represents the chains that bind them to an alien and frightening spectacle, and each new day is evidence of their powerlessness; a stumbling headlong on a circular treadmill; always running faster than they can comfortably muster. A stumbling headlong on a circular treadmill; always running faster than they can comfortably muster…. Most of those who read this though, like the Forest Sublime, will discover power hidden within the prism of natural cycles, and the Parade of Days becomes the quiet retreat of potency and possibility. The secret essence, well, one of them, is in the quantity of days; the collective accumulation of small piecemeal steps that has enormous potential for accomplishment. When we witness the bloom of a flower, we observe the moment of culmination, and it is a “wonder”-ful moment in time. And yet, as reasonable beings (!) the rational part of us can understand that this moment of culmination is built on successive days of piecemeal growth. If we wish to shift the paradigm, to balance the scales; to stop the rot of overpopulation and “development” (and greed), we may proceed in this manner. Like Johnny Appleseed, we can plant a new orchard, one day at a time, seeds tossed over the shoulder, as we pass through our daily activities. This is not the only way to proceed with the re-greening of our biosphere, but it has a long history of success, and it is, at least in part, the stuff of life.....
