EP's Diary: ekosTV as New-New TV?

Wow...did things ever get exciting two nights ago...the evening of the day I wrote in my blog about how we've been wrestling with who we are or what we are. You'll recall that I wsa considering the idea of re-branding ekosTV as a multi-media channel and I asked for feedback. Well look what kind of response I got from one of my team members to this idea:

"As for our “branding,” I think ekostv IS TV. NEW TV. It’s highly interactive, deeply enriched, new-style television. (maybe this is new-new TV!) We are re-creating the idea of what television can be and accomplish. Because our mandate and our topic is one that engages absolutely every living creature on this earth, we are the perfect staging ground for a new, truly interactive, meaningful, evolved television experience. We’re not ENN, we’re not CBC or cable TV. We’re not a website or a tv show and we’re not a PR company or environmental activists. So, clearly, we are something completely insane!! Oops ... Sorry .. That just came out ... We are multi-media, but at heart, we are TV because it is a VISUAL medium that is the core of what we do. We’re adding lots of new, engaging, and highly effective layers ... Making it democratic ... But if we think about ourselves as TV then we ARE TV. A new and different kind of TV. Progressive TV."

Phew! Don't know what your response is to this delightful rant is, but I certainly know what mine was and still is. It sends shivers down my spine. I think the nail has been hit squarely on the head. What do you think?

The bit about interactivity also reminds me to let you know that ekosTV has joined a consortium of interests with members drawn from Royal Roads University and University of Victoria faculty as well as several companies with expertise in creating feature-rich, multi-media learning environments. The purpose of the consortium is to develop such a learning environment wherein communities will be engaged in the process of building scenarios for the transition to a post-carbon society. We're currently applying for funding to develop the related content, software, and technology (on-line and broadband wireless). Stay tuned for some possible announcements early in the new year.

Till the next time...
